Ledwell Family Shield
The original Ledwell Shield was created back in the 1980s by Michael Rush. I believe at the time he was in the 8th grade. I recall asking him to draw a shield for the family. He wanted to know what it should contain. I explained that the Ledwell's were farmers, we had white relatives, and the crop was tobacco. From that conversation, the shield was produced.
The tractor on the shield represents the farming. The cross-like item represents tobacco crops. The shaking of hands represents our white and black heritage, and finally, the breaking of the chains represents the freedom of us as slaves.
Now you know.
