Maben Ledwell

To some of you, younger ones let me update on what I know about your great, uncle Maben Ledwell, You are a descendant of Maben because he was the brother of Oscar Ledwell. The family received the history of this relative due to the help of Jewell Ledwell and Angelique. While these two were researching the history of the Ledwell family, they came across Maben. This is the history that was told to me by Maben relatives.

Maben and his family left North Carolina in the early 1900s. He relocated to South Carolina with his family. Not exactly sure just how many children Maben had at that time. Maben had a total of 8 children by his current wife, Hattie Bell Suggs. The children were as following; Delphin Ledwell, Lonnie Ledwell, Manley Ledwell, Creatie Ledwell, Greaty Ledwell, Lizzie Ledwell, Jennie Ledwell, and Dorathy Ledwell. All of the children from this marriage are deceased at this time. Upon leaving North Carolina, it was stated that Maben denied his African heritage. His family as said to me indicated that Maben informed them he was from a foreign country. I think they stated it was Sweden. We know that after relocating to South Carolina, they would not allow his children to attend the white school. It is believed that several of the children never attended school because he would not let them go to black schools.

I was contacted by his granddaughter Annie, who supplied me with a great deal of info on the family. Annie was the daughter of Delphin Ledwell. She informed me that she had visited the Ledwell homestead as a younger girl. Upon visiting her, I was able to make contact with several of Delphin relatives.

Upon meeting with Annie, she informed me that Maben married Melissa Goodwin after the death of Hattie and had an additional eight children. They were as following, Sarah Ellen, Peat Ledwell, Jake Ledwell, Esauw Ledwell, Lila Ledwell Smith, Dorendy Ledwell, Corbett Ledwell, and Webster Ledwell. Members of Hattie Suggs family can be found in the old cemetery in Asheboro, North Carolina.
